About Me

Helena Colindres is a double degree student pursuing a BA in Comparative American Studies with a concentration in Identity and Diversity as well as a BM in Classical Vocal Performance. They have had the opportunity to perform all over campus for various events, showcasing their voice and other talents while bring together the two worlds that they straddle as a double degree student. They hope to use their platform as an opera singer to bring about change to the art form so that it is more inclusive of different world views and social expectations as well as making the performances accessible to people of all backgrounds. Some highlights of their time at Oberlin include taking part in the Marilyn Horne master classes twice, performing the role of Despina in the Spring '20 production of Cosi fan tutte, stepping with Umoja at the dance showcase, attending Oberlin in Italy, and performing spirituals all over campus throughout their time at Oberlin. They were one of the founding members of the Oberlin Spiritual Ensemble and secretary for the Latinx Music Union. They will be attending Johns Hopkin's Peabody Conservatory in Fall of '20, pursuing their masters in voice.

Favorite Place

I love Finney Chapel. It is such an amazing place to sing in and it is such a beautiful building. I have so many wonderful memories there from the Marilyn Horne masterclasses to the finals of the concerto competition, and the countless concerts that I participated in and had the pleasure of attending as an audience member. There was never a dull moment at Finney.

Favorite Class

My voice studio with Professor Manz was my favorite class because of the fact that I got to perform for my peers in a safe space as well as see my peers' growth through the years.
