About Me

Aly Fogel is an English major and Theater minor who participated in student theater and journalism on campus. During her first two years at Oberlin, she acted in many theater productions. She played Stevie in Oberlin Student Theater Association's "The Goat, or Who is Sylvia" (2016), Jessica in OSTA's "This Is Our Youth" (2017), and Claire in the LabSeries production "The Maids" (2018). Fogel also served on the OSTA board from 2016-2017. In addition to her participation in student theater, Fogel spent much of her time at Oberlin writing. In her third-year, she wrote for "The Oberlin Review." In her studies, Fogel focused on representations of gender and sexuality in literature and film. She taught the Experimental College class "Queer Women on Screen" in the Fall or 2019. During her senior year, she was also an Arts & Culture Editor at "The Oberlin Review," and she worked as an Editorial Intern at "Cleveland Magazine" in her final semester.

Study Abroad

I studied abroad in Amsterdam in the Fall of 2018

Favorite Place

My favorite space at Oberlin is the Local. While it's not a unique answer, I spent so much of my time in that underground coffee shop, hunkered down studying with my friends or running into everyone I know while waiting in line for an early morning bagel. It's a space I'll truly miss!

Favorite Class

My favorite class was Angela LaGrotteria's CAST 310: "Where Do I Fit In?: Placing Identities in US Literature," because Angie addressed regional identity in a way that was both relevant to the current political moment and personally fulfilling.

Clubs & Organizations

Memorable Oberlin Moment

My most memorable Oberlin moment is the night that the email was sent out that students would have to evacuate College housing. I was in my home on North Main Street, with my closest friends around me, suddenly hit with the news that many of my friends would have to leave abruptly to new their homes across the country or the globe. Looking around me, I realized that I had been introduced to such incredible people. I'll never forget that moment when life was turned upside down and I realized just how lucky I was to be part of the Oberlin community.

Graduation Date

Future Plans

My immediate goal is to start working as a freelance journalist in the Chicagoland area.
